Sorghum Sugar Cookies

Recipe my mother got from a client at my father’s audiology clinic. Great cookies to make around the holidays.

Sorghum Sugar Cookies

  • Total time: 30 Minutes
  • Servings: 3-4 Dozen Cookies

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups Flour
  • 3 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Ground Cloves
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Ginger
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3/4 Cup Lard (see note)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Cups Sugar, plus more for rolling
  • 1/2 Cup Sorghum (see note)

Directions

  • 1)

    Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • 2)

    In a bowl, add the first 6 ingredients and mix well with a wire whisk.

  • 3)

    In a separate bowl, add the remaining 4 ingredients. Mix well and add the dry ingredients and stir well again.

  • 4)

    Form dough into balls and roll them in a bowl of sugar.

  • 5)

    Put on cookie sheets and take a glass and flatten them out a little.

  • 6)

    Bake at 350°F for 9 minutes.

Notes

For the lard, my mother substituted a roughly 50/50 mix of shortening and butter.

For the sorghum, my mother used sorghum molasses.
