Crumble Topping

“Crumble toppings are a nice variation to top off a fruit pie. They can brown too much before the filling is done, so wait for the last twenty minutes of the bake to sprinkle this oat crumble evenly over the filling.”

Crumble Topping

  • Total time: 30 Minutes
  • Servings: 1-2 Pies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup (110g) Brown Sugar, packed
  • 1/4 tsp Salt (a pinch)
  • 1/2 Cup (73g) Flour
  • 1 1/2 Cups (144g) Whole Oats
  • 8 Tbsp (112g) Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 Cup (60g) Pecans, chopped (optional)

Directions

  • 1)

Put the brown sugar, salt, flour, and oats in the bowl of a food processor and pulse a few times to mix.

  • 2)

Cut the chilled butter into 8 large pieces and place them in the food processor bowl. Pulse the food processor about 20 times to cut the butter into the dry ingredients. It should look crumbly. Pulse more if needed.

  • 3)

Add the optional chopped nuts to the crumble mixture and pulse a few more times.

  • 4)

Pour the mixture into a bowl or plastic bag and chill in the freezer for at least 15 minutes while you make the filling.
